AI skin analysis vs a dermatologist

An app and a dermatologist are not competing: one reads the surface of a photo in seconds for nothing, the other examines you, takes a history and can prescribe. Apps are for routines and tracking. Dermatologists are for anything that is a medical problem.

What each one can actually do

An app measures a photo and suggests cosmetic steps. A dermatologist examines your skin directly, asks what you have tried, considers medication and health history, can take samples and can prescribe. The difference is not accuracy so much as access to everything a photo leaves out.

An AI skin app
Reads a photo, names visible traits, suggests a cosmetic routine, tracks change over time, costs little or nothing
A dermatologist
Examines skin in person, takes a history, diagnoses, prescribes, performs procedures, follows up

When an app is enough

An app is enough when the question is cosmetic and you simply do not know where to start: which cleanser, whether to use a moisturiser with oily skin, what a sensible order looks like, or whether something is slowly improving. These need structure, not a diagnosis.

  • You do not know your skin type or what routine suits it
  • You want a sensible order of steps rather than a shelf of products
  • You want to see whether a routine is working over weeks
  • You want hairstyle, glasses or beard guidance for your face shape

When to see a dermatologist

See one when skin is painful, spreading, bleeding or scarring, when acne is deep and leaving marks, when a rash will not settle, or when a mole changes in size, shape or colour. Also go if a reasonable routine has changed nothing after eight to twelve weeks.

An app result should never be a reason to wait. If something looks medical, book the appointment and use the app afterwards for the routine.

Using both together

The two fit well in sequence. Use an app first to learn your skin type and follow a basic routine, which is often enough on its own. If it is not, arrive at the appointment knowing what you have used, for how long, and what changed. That saves the visit real time.

Get a routine for your own skin

Saundarya AI is an AI skin analysis and grooming app that reads a single selfie and returns a personalised report: face shape, skin type, detected skin concerns with the visual evidence behind them, a morning and night skincare routine, product picks at three budgets, and an 8-week improvement plan.

Generic advice is a starting point. A scan reads your skin type and concerns on your own face, shows the visual evidence and a confidence score, and builds a morning and night routine around it. The first full analysis is free.

This is general cosmetic guidance, not medical advice. See a dermatologist for skin that is painful, spreading, scarring or not improving after 8-12 weeks.
